Battery Monitoring System Architecture – Alpais BMS

Battery Monitoring System Components

The Alpais Battery Monitoring System is designed with a modular architecture consisting of three main hardware components: Battery Module, String Module, and Control Module. This structure enables scalable monitoring, flexible system design, and reliable data collection for stationary battery applications.

Alpais BMS can be easily adapted to different system sizes and configurations, making it suitable for applications ranging from small battery banks to large-scale industrial installations.

The system architecture is based on the following modular structure:

  • One Battery Module for each individual battery
  • One String Module for each battery string
  • One Control Module for up to 4 String Modules
  • Each String Module can connect up to 120 Battery Modules
  • Each Control Module can monitor up to 480 batteries across multiple strings

Battery Module

battery-module

Battery Modules are designed for lead-acid batteries and NiCd batteries. There are different types of Battery Module: 6V, 12V and 1.2V/2V.

Each Battery Module measures key parameters such as internal resistance, battery voltage, and battery temperature, providing detailed insight into individual battery condition and performance.

The Battery Module has a transparent cover and 3 LEDs for quick on-site detection.

A key feature of the system is automatic addressing, which simplifies installation and reduces commissioning time.

String Module

The String Module shares the same case with 3 LEDs.

It measures String Voltage, String Current, Ambient Temperature/Humidity and charge/discharge cycles, enabling comprehensive monitoring at string level..

Environment and charge/discharge cycles are monitored as standard in Alpais BMS.

It also transmits Battery Module data to the Control Module.

Control Module

The Control Module is the central unit of the system, responsible for collecting, processing, and managing all measurement data.

It supports up to 4 string connections (up to 480 batteries across parallel strings) and enables integration with external systems via communication protocols such as SNMP, Modbus RTU, and Modbus TCP. This allows seamless integration with battery monitoring systems and SCADA environments.

The system can store up to 10 years of historical data and provides Ethernet connectivity for remote access and monitoring.

There are two types of Control Modules, one of which includes an Embedded Server. In this version, Alpais Software is pre-installed and runs directly on the Control Module, eliminating the need for an external server or PC.

This approach simplifies installation and reduces commissioning time. Additionally, the embedded solution enhances system security by keeping data and software within the device.
