What Is IEC 61850?

IEC 61850 is a communication standard used in power utility automation, particularly for data exchange between intelligent electronic devices, station-level systems and substation SCADA platforms.

In a battery monitoring project, an IEC 61850 gateway can make selected battery-system measurements and alarms available within the site's existing substation communication architecture.

Alpais IEC 61850 Gateway Integration

The Alpais Control Module collects battery and string data from the monitoring system. The IEC 61850 gateway receives the required information through a configured Modbus connection and converts the selected data points for use within the IEC 61850 communication environment.

The gateway does not replace the main Alpais monitoring architecture. It provides protocol conversion and communication integration between Alpais and the supervisory system.

IEC 61850 Battery Monitoring Integration Flow

  1. Battery Modules measure individual battery or cell parameters.
  2. String Modules collect battery data and string-level measurements.
  3. The Control Module processes and stores the monitoring information.
  4. The configured Modbus interface transfers the required data to the gateway.
  5. The IEC 61850 gateway maps selected values and alarms to the site communication system.
  6. SCADA or the station-level monitoring system displays the integrated data.

Project-Specific Signal Mapping

Data objects, naming, scaling, alarm logic and communication parameters must be aligned with the customer's SCADA database and substation engineering requirements.

Gateway hardware is selected according to the required network interface, fiber architecture and redundancy concept.
